Internet Search Engines: [Archie] [ArchiePlex] [Cusi] [DejaNews] [Excite] [InfoSeek] [Inktomi] [Lycos] [Magellan] [Open Text] [Point] [WebCrawler] [Yahoo] A new one is McKinley at www.mckinley.com Note: "If you're on the Internet, you can "telnet [site name]" and login in as "archie", at which point you'll get basic directions and pointers to other Archie machines." (TidBITSsite-notes.html#130; Gateways 1: Internet) You may be able to use archie directly if you have an unix shell account, just type archie at the prompt. Virtus WalkThrough lets you set up a 3D model to use with a freeway player, permitting virtual reality 3D walkthroughs. Incorporates VRML, the emerging standard for 3D communication on the Internet, to permit anybody to browse your model, just like a web page. $229 for competitive upgrade. Mac II or higher. 8 mb free ram, System >= 6.0.4. On this subject, MacUser claims that MultiUserDungeons (MUDs) on the internet are becoming popular for business meetings. You can use TelNet (e.g. ftp://ftp.ncsa.uiuc.edu/Telnet/Mac/ to use the MUD, or a client which runs on your own machine (better). Two mac client programs are MUDWeller and Mudling, available from ftp://ftp.math.okstate.edu/pub/muds/clients/misc. There are companies who will set up your meeting space (e.g. Meeting Space from World Benders (wb-info@worldbenders.com). Metaverse rents virtual office space in which you can create your own dungeon using a MOO (MUD Object Oriented). MOO is also being used to attempt to create a virtual university (Diversity University at telnet://moo.du.org:8888). There is also MUSE (MultiUser Simulation Environment). That is used for an experimental cyber museum (MicroMuse at telnet://guest@michael.ai.mit.edu). Zoom Voice VFX 14.4V MacPack now offers automatic switching between voice and fax calls, remote retrieval of messages, multiple private mailboxes, and, of course, fax scheduling. $229. Farallon sells AirDock for $99, for infrared connection to LocalTalk, Ethernet or TokenRing network up to six feet away. The PB 5300 comes with infrared, so you just need this on your desktop Mac. Apple sells AppleShare for $1,800. I guess AppleTalk is its deliberately crippled cousin. More on ISDN (³It Sounds Damn Nice². SaskTel will set you up with an ISDN (digital line). The basic version has two separate logical channels for data (B channels) and one for control. So, with a single line, you can do multiple things. It could carry a fax at the same time as computer modem type information, at the same time as voice. Presumably it could do several of the same things at the same time also. It handles 64kbps bidirectionally on each B channel. You should pay for only the time actually online. It uses the existing phone grid. Usually, only the connections need be changed. Access is lost if the power goes out. For comparison, LocalTalk is theoretically 230 kbps. This is kilobits per second. The Œmodemı (not really, because it doesnıt convert to analog) for your computer is at least $400, but as far as your system is concerned, it is just a really fast modem. You can use a router to treat the connection as part of your ethernet network, but routers cost at least $1,000. Also, routers may not permit you to hook up voice and fax and analog modems. See also www.alumni.caltech.edu/~dank/isdn, or usenet comp.dcom.isdn. USRobotics, 800-877-2677 has upgraded its Courier V.Everything to go up to 33.6 kbps. If you have the flash RANGE OF MOTION, get the free upgrade from ftp://www.usr.com/pub. Apparently, Mailshare was the only Mac based internet mail server software. Apple bought it. Retrospect 3.0 is now scriptable, and supports AppleScript and Apple Events. Windows95 multitasking only works with applications written with the Win32 API, not with most existing 16 bit applications, because it contains remnants of 16 bit DOS and Windows 3.1 code. One such remnant is a routine called USER.EXE which has a 64k memory limit. Once used up, it crashes. The 16 bit applications still use it. To deinstall software, sometimes you need to remove code lines from AUTOEXEC.BAT and SYSTEM.INI by hand. Previously, Windows could use AppleTalk using Personal MacLAN Connect 5.0. Windows 95 canıt. The same is true for AppleShare. Previously, you could mount Mac disks with Conversion Plus (DataViz) but no longer. Previously, you could remotely control either your Windows pc or your Mac with Timbuktu (Farallon) but now just the latter. In Word 5, to insert normal text before a table, select the first cell and insert a page break. Put in the text. Kill the page break. To kill the desktop on only a particular volume, create and save a document called ³Desktop² to the root level of that volume. In Nowıs SuperBoomerang, letıs save you want to navigate to a particular folder. You havenıt made that folder a permanent entry on the menu, and it isnıt included on the recent list. However, if a file in that folder is accessible, hold shift and select that file. In addition to using the Internet for supercheap voice calls, you can make them supersecure with PGPfone which uses the Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) encryption method. Came out originally for the Mac. ftp://net-dist.mit.edu/ A net user in France, with the help of 150 workstations and a handful of super computers, broke Netscapeıs encryption key. Even that may be illegal to export from the U.S., which permits only Œweakı Crypto to get an export license. The difference is the size of the key. It was the 40 bit key which was broken, in 8 days. US users may soon have 64 bit keys. The University of California has announced plans to offer courses through America OnLine. Politicians and businesses use clipping services to get all the stories on a subject from the press. MediaLink now does it for the Internet (www.medialinkworldwide.com). If you use a PPP connection, through configPPP, you may notice it takes a notion to log on without your instructions from time to time. If you use Hard Close rather than Soft Close, it wonıt. Who knows why or at what price? Digicash now sells ecash, which can work like hard currency over the Internet. You donıt have to entrust your credit card number over the Internet (www.digicash.com). Cybercash is another option (www.cybercash.com). First Virtual (www.fv.com) offers accounts to merchants and customers. The buyer gives the merchant the account number. The merchant gives it to FV. FV confirms with the customer. It is paid. At least this sort of electronic escrow doesnıt depend on encryption.
