Further, Macs without card slots (like PowerBooks) must use a SCSI device (expensive and slow) to use the Ethernet. Initially, I ordered a $500 router which connects to both the Internet and the LocalTalk cables and translates between them. This is the fastest and most reliable answer. However, System 7.5 comes with LaserWriter Bridge, which, when installed on one computer connected to both networks, serves the same purpose. Unfortunately, it disables computer to computer use of LocalTalk. For $80, Apple sold me LocalTalk Bridge. It is just like the router, but is software installed on a computer hooked to both networks. Everybody on either network can see all the other computers and devices and use them. It can even be turned on and off without restarting (though sometimes you must restart a printer to force it to give a proper address). I think this should be part of the standard system. Ordering files is done mostly for organization or esthetics, but it is important to load system extensions in the right order. The former can be achieved with ¹view by label¹, but the latter always uses alphabetical order. Using punctuation in front of the name works, but looks funny. Using a carriage return works and looks fine. Copy the CR from a text editor and paste it in front of the name. The name will appear blank, but when you hit enter, it will be ok. Speaking of loading order, I discovered after weeks of operation, that ConfigPPP must load before MacTCP, and that TCPackDemo must load before the Now Utilities. RunShare is an extension which supposedly speeds network file transfers by 5 to 7 times. If you just can¹t stand MicroSoft one moment longer, NisusWriter 4.1 offers noncontiguous selection, unlimited undos, autoindexing, searching in unopened documents, foreign language capability (20), speech (5 languages, a macro language, and HTML tools.
