The kids might get teased at school Tulsa Users of Macintosh Society (TUMS) staged a Marathon/Marathon on KOTV Channel 6, in Tulsa, Ok on January 15, 1996. The show airs in a market made up of portions of a four state area. The Gaming SIG of TUMS organized network playing of Bungie Software's Marathon, and presented the concept to KOTV's You're On with Sam Jones producer Ike Walker, a new Mac user himself, and worked out the details to play a networked Marathon on LIVE television. During the show participants played Marathon, and a live feed was done from an AV Mac to the station's switcher providing the home viewers with on screen action as the game was played. Sam Jones praised the Macintosh for it's ease of set up and use. Asked questions of various group members, showed off a PowerBook 520, which was connected to the internet and displayed a TUMS PR about the show. He also noted that the display that the viewers at home saw could ONLY be acomplished with the Macintosh. Sam's Musical Director, Sonny Gray, also a Mac user, made comments in the "Been There, Done That" vein concerning Win. '95, and the use of his Macintosh for music composing and arranging. Sam was impressed by the 3-D action of Marathon, the stereo sound, and the great graphics. I provided a rare "Been There, Done That" t-shirt for a give-away to a caller (You're On is a call-in type format). TUMS has realized a significant increase in membership inquiries, inquiries about purchases of Macintosh computers, has realized an increase in membership for the traditionally slow month of January, and has answered inquiries about where to buy Marathon, both versions. This has proven to be a great idea for getting out the word about Macintosh, having alot of fun doing it, and also promoting the user group. TUMS did give all of the shows Mac users free one year memberships after the show, as a thank you. The show airs for one hour, and most all of the hour was dedicated to TUMS and the Macs. We could not have afforded to buy that much publicity. Michael Crabbe Secretary Tulsa Users of Macintosh mcrabbe@ionet.net courtesy of bjaques@wimsey.com
